Sussex County Sheriff's Office

New Jersey

Sheriff Robert E. Untig

Your Sheriff's Office has the responsibility for a wide range of Law Enforcement services. Included in these are the Bureau of Corrections, Bureau of Law Enforcement, Office of Emergency Management and the Fire Marshal / Fire Coordinator's Office.

Our Mission

The Sussex County Sheriff's Office dedicates itself to protecting the life and property of the citizens of the county, providing primary and support services to all law enforcement agencies, along with maintaining traditional sheriff's services.  The office recognizes that the ability to successfully complete this mission is based on mutual respect and responsibility, shared by all agencies, and most importantly the citizens it serves.  As professionals we are duty bound to enforce the laws in a fair and impartial manner, recognizing both the statutory and judicial limitations of police authority, and at all times, protecting the constitutional rights of all persons.

Sheriff Robert E. Untig announces that his office is participating in a program that will provide 500 free firearm safety kits to local residents through partnership with Project ChildSafe, the nationwide firearms safety education program. The safety kits, which include a gunlock, will be distributed at the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office, 39 High Street, Newton, New Jersey.

Project ChildSafe, a program developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), will distribute millions of firearm safety kits throughout the country over the next year. The program is funded by a U.S. Department of Justice grant, with additional funding provided by the firearms industry.

“We encourage residents to pick up a Project ChildSafe kit so that they can securely store their firearm,” said Sheriff Robert E. Untig. “Each kit contains a safety curriculum and a cable-style gun lock. The locks fit on most types of handguns, rifles and shotguns. The goal is to prevent a child or any other unauthorized person from accessing a firearm in you home.”

By partnering with project ChildSafe, The Sussex County Sheriff’s Office is participating in a growing national effort to promote firearms safety education to all gun owners. Project ChildSafe will distribute gunlock safety kits to all 50 states and the five U.S. territories.

“We are pleased to have the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office as a Project ChildSafe partner,” said Dee Dee Dickins, spokesperson for the program. “Project ChildSafe is an important step forward in helping ensure that all firearm owners fully understand their responsibilities with respect to the safe handling and storage of firearms.

For further information please contact the Sussex County Sheriff’s Office at 973-579-0888.  There are a limited number of gunlock safety kits and will be distributed on a first come basis to county residents.

Residents are asked to contact their local law enforcement agency prior to contacting the Sheriff's Office to see if they are participating in this program.
