Sheriff Robert E. Untig

A message from the Sheriff

Thank you for your interest in this office and please accept my invitation to visit with us at any time here on the World Wide Web.

    The Sheriff is the only Law Enforcement Official elected by you, the people of Sussex County.  Since November of 1989, I have had the privilege to serve as your Sheriff.  I am currently devoting my efforts toward making the Office of the Sheriff both progressive and professional while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

    Your Sheriff's Office has  the responsibility for a wide range of Law Enforcement services to the Federal, State, County and Municipal Governments.  Included in these are the Bureau of Corrections and the Bureau of Law Enforcement.

Now I'll  let our webmaster tell you a-little about me and I hope that you enjoy our site.

    A life long resident of Sussex County, Sheriff Bob Untig grew up in Frankford Township, graduated from High Point Regional High School, and received an Associates Degree with honors from Mercer County Community College.  

    Sheriff Untig began his career at the Sussex County Sheriff's Office in 1977 as a County Correction's Officer.  In 1981 he became a Sheriff's Officer and was promoted  to the rank of Sergeant in 1985. He was then promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1988.  Untig was elected Sheriff in 1989 and has served the citizens of Sussex County since then. 

    Sheriff Untig is active in many community and law enforcement organizations to include the following:  He is a member and past Vice President of Sussex County Police Benevolent Association #138;  Sussex County Association of Chiefs of Police; Sussex County Peace Officers Association;  National Sheriff's Association;  Sheriff's Association of New Jersey;  Sussex County Republican Committee;  County Officers Association;  New Jersey Association of Counties Law and Public Safety Committee;  Interstate Law Enforcement Association;  Sussex County Detective Association; The Blue Knights NJ IX.  He is also a member of the Delaware Valley United Methodist Church;  Kittatinny Lodge #164 F&AM and Branchville Rotary.


Undersheriff John G. Armeno

Bureau of Law  Enforcement

(Administration)

    John G. Armeno is a 45 year career law enforcement officer with two agencies.  He began his career in 1963 as a beat officer with the East Orange Police Department.  He advanced through the ranks and was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1978, a rank he held until his retirement in 1992.  During his tenure he was assigned to the Patrol and Detective Divisions.  He commanded the Patrol Division and Safe Neighborhoods Unit.  He is a hostage negotiator, firearms and classroom instructor.

    In January 1992 he was appointed as an Undersheriff with the Sussex County Sheriff's Office and was assigned to oversee the Bureau of Corrections.  From 1996 to February of 2005 he was assigned to oversee the Bureau of Law Enforcement, Court Operations and Civil Process.  Undersheriff Armeno is presently responsible  for budget, Internal Affairs, and coordinating the day-to-day operations within the two bureaus.

Undersheriff Virgil R. Rome Jr. 

(Civil and Operations)

Virgil Rome was born and raised in Sussex County .  Upon graduating from High Point Regional High School , he attended Trenton State College (The College of New Jersey) and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in the field of Criminal Justice.  While attending college he was offered the opportunity to work as an investigative intern in the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office and did so for three years.  This led to his being hired full-time as a Detective by that agency in 1983.  While employed by the Prosecutor’s Office, Rome worked in and supervised every investigative unit and also managed numerous administrative responsibilities, rising to the rank of Lieutenant.  He was assigned as the Commander of the Sussex County Narcotics Task Force for a period of six years (1997-2003), supervising and participating in undercover drug investigations, and spent a significant portion of his career leading inquiries into major crimes, including death investigations, sexual and child abuse crimes, arsons and robberies.  He had a significant role in the investigation of many of the most serious crimes that occurred in Sussex County during the last two and a half decades.  He also served as the Sussex County Counter-Terrorism Coordinator, is a certified classroom instructor and a certified technician on the Sussex County Hazardous Materials Response Team.  Rome left the Prosecutor’s Office in February of 2005 after twenty-two years and joined the Sheriff’s Office as Undersheriff.  His responsibilities include overseeing the Bureau of Law Enforcement, Court Operations and Civil Process.

 Undersheriff Rome is a member of Sussex County PBA Local 138, a charter member of the Sussex County Detectives Association, Sussex County Peace Officers Association, the Interstate Law Enforcement Association, the National and International Narcotics Enforcement Officers Associations, the International Terrorism Investigator’s Association, Harvard Associates in Police Science, and the Sussex County Domestic Preparedness Task Force.  He is also member and line officer in the Fredon Volunteer Fire Company


 

Undersheriff David DiMarco

Bureau of Corrections

    David DiMarco joined the Sheriff's Office in October, 1996.  His present assignment is Administrator for the Bureau of Corrections.

    He was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York until moving to Hopatcong, New Jersey in 1961.  He graduated from Sparta High School in 1964 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1966 and received an Honorable Discharge in 1968; and served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve both active and inactive service.  His law enforcement career commenced with his appointment to police officer in the Borough of Hopatcong in June, 1968 where he served in several different capacities prior to being promoted to Chief of Police in December, 1978.  In 1982, he was selected to attend the F.B.I. National Academy (FBINA) in Quantico, Virginia; and in 1993 the F.B.I. Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar (LEEDS), Princeton University.

    Undersheriff DiMarco holds an Associate in Science in Law Enforcement from the County College of Morris; Bachelors in Science in Public Safety Administration; and Master of Arts-Urban Education and Community Affairs from William Paterson College.

    He is also a member of the Sussex County Community College adjunct faculty staff/Criminal Justice, 1995-present.

    Undersheriff DiMarco has been active in many law enforcement and community volunteer committees and organizations throughout his career to include the following:  American Corrections Association;  New Jersey County Jail Warden's Association;  New Jersey Attorney General's Subcommittee on Police Reporting Use of Force- 1992.  International Association of Chiefs of Police;  State Association of Chiefs of Police;  Sussex County Association of Chiefs of Police;  FBINA Associates of New Jersey;  F.B.I. LEEDA; Sussex County Mental Health and Alcoholism Board;  Sussex County Local Advisory Council on Drugs and Alcohol;  Borough of Hopatcong Municipal Alliance Team;  Sussex County D.W.I. Task Force;  Sussex County Marine Corps League and the Lake Musconetcong American Legion.
